Re: Start Here
Before you begin, you must organize your work. Every good article starts somewhere! You will start by getting your thoughts together and discovering the kind of "hard-hitting information" your readers want to know. Download and print a copy of the article organizer to get started. (If you have trouble downloading the PDF file, click here for the Microsoft Word file.)

Re: YourSecond Task
Get to know Mr. dePaola. Visit his website at http://tomie.com/ and gather more information. Fill out your article organizer with the information you will discover. For example, make sure you share with your audience where he was born, when he was born, the number of books he's written and other details you find important.

Re: Your Third Task
Now that you've gotten to know some basic information for your article, visit Reading Rockets and check out their interview with Tomie. There are four videos of Tomie in action. Find out more about how he feels about being an original artist, learning to read (and his misadventures in Kindergarten!) and what aches and pains he has being an artist. Read the transcript of his interview after you watch all 8 videos. Add information to your planning sheet.

Re: Your Fourth Task
Before completing your first newspaper article, take a look at another great publication. This magazine is called Time for Kids, written by kids just for kids. Click on news, then "sports," then click on "Countdown to the Games." Notice how Katherine Watkins writes her article. Spend about 10 minutes on the TFK website exploring other news articles.

Put together all that you've learned about the subject of your newspaper article. Visit our "virtual newspaper" on Glogster and set up your newspaper article about Tomie. Be sure to include his biography information (where he was born, his birthday, where he lives now) as well as information about the books he has written. Include a picture and a description of your favorite book.
